Common Conveyor Belt Failures: Tear, Tracking, Cover Wear & Delamination Prevention

October 2, 2026

Field failures of Continental rubber conveyor belts mainly fall into four categories: longitudinal rip, belt mis-tracking, abnormal cover wear and belt delamination. Most failures can be prevented via regular inspection.

  1. Longitudinal rip: Caused by sharp metal or big lumps stuck in chutes piercing belt. Prevention: Install magnetic separator and rip detector; inspect chute liners regularly.
  2. Belt mis-tracking: Misaligned rollers/drums or off-center material feed. Prevention: Align rollers and pulleys, adjust material loading point and fit belt sway switches.
  3. Abnormal cover wear: High material abrasion or over-tensioned scrapers. Prevention: Select proper cover grade and adjust scraper pressure to avoid excessive scraping.
  4. Delamination: Water ingress, corrosion or poor splice quality. Water penetrates cord/canvas layer and separates rubber from reinforcement. Prevention: Rain protection, qualified hot splice and timely surface repair to block water entry.

Set regular inspection schedule with Conti MultiProtect online monitoring to capture early damage and repair small defects before catastrophic rip.
