Common types and causes of conveyor belt damage

(1) Localized Wear (Surface Damage): Conveyor belts are highly susceptible to this type of damage. The main reason is that large pieces of material can easily get stuck at the conveyor belt transfer points, chute guards, damaged idlers, and cleaners. When the conveyor belt is running, this causes excessive wear in certain areas. At Shihong Special Steel Company, the conveyor belts of the unloading machine and train receiving chute have long chutes, and the contact between the chute guards and the conveyor belt causes rapid wear on the conveyor belt's rubber surface. There have been instances where some areas have worn down to several layers of wear, while other areas remain relatively intact.

(2) Localized Damage (Penetrating Scratches): When the conveyor belt receives materials, large stones and sharp materials often get mixed in. At transfer points, due to insufficient buffering, these materials can cause significant impact, breaking the conveyor belt and creating localized holes, especially at transfer stations with high material drop. If sharp objects are mixed in with the material, they can easily tear the conveyor belt, causing large-area tears.

(3) Damage to the joint: The joint of the rubber conveyor belt is often the most vulnerable part of the conveyor belt, becoming its weak point, because the joint is formed by re-overlapping and vulcanizing the belt during installation. Poor treatment of the joint and failure to meet vulcanization process standards can easily lead to premature wear, delamination, cracking, peeling, and other phenomena. If not treated in time, the damage to the joint will deteriorate rapidly, easily causing the scratches to expand, shortening the belt's lifespan, and even causing the conveyor belt to break.
