Steel Cord vs Fabric Conveyor Belt: Application Comparison for Continental Belts

October 2, 2026

Two major heavy-duty Continental conveyor belts: ST steel cord series and EP fabric series. Many clients confuse their suitable working conditions at early project phase. Key comparison below.

Steel Cord Belt (ST)
Reinforcement: galvanized steel cords; very low elongation ≤0.25%; withstand ultra-high tension; suitable for long-distance, large drop, high capacity; long factory segments; higher unit price and complex hot splicing. Typical use: long mine overland conveyors and large port ship loading lines.

EP Fabric Belt
Reinforcement: multi-layer polyester canvas; higher elongation than steel cord; medium tension; medium & short distance; lower cost and simple splicing; lighter weight. Typical use: aggregate plants, cement raw meal and short power plant conveyors.

Quick rule: For length over 1km, big elevation difference and high tension, choose steel cord. For lines within several hundred meters with medium load, EP fabric delivers better cost performance. Hybrid design is possible: main line steel cord + branch fabric belts to balance performance and investment.
